A favorite destination inn for Western Colorado tourists, travelers, and vacationers is the historic Bross Hotel in Paonia, Colorado, a 10-room bed-and-breakfast inn. Built in 1906, the Bross has served the Paonia community for well over a century, providing a comfortable and relaxing environment for its guests. Its exterior walls are solid red brick, giving it a sturdy and appealing appearance. Inside, the main floor has an entryway and reception area, a breakfast room capable of serving over 20 people, a commercial kitchen, and office. Downstairs is a TV room and meeting room, two ½ baths, laundry and utility room, and the owner’s accommodations. Upstairs, on two more levels, are 10 spacious guest rooms, each with its own modern bath. The property has an adjacent parking lot dedicated to the building. The hotel’s plumbing, electrical, and heating systems have all been updated.
The Bross Hotel was acquired in 2017 by Kevin and Karen Kropp, a well-known couple in Paonia. The inn was in need of modernization with its booking, marketing, and management systems. While Kevin is a full-time orchardist, growing apples, cherries, peaches, plums, and apricots on several different orchards in the North Fork Valley, he and Karen put their full efforts into improving the Bross’s bookings, systems, facilities, and reputation. Their efforts have been very successful, as they built new manager’s quarters, installed a new modern booking system, marketed the property on a national basis, and doubled the occupancy rate. Despite closing the inn for December, January, and February, the Bross is showing good returns. Karen and Kevin think it’s time to enjoy the rewards of their hard work and start traveling.
